The Lych gate was presented to St Ann's in 1915 in memory of William Henry Roby who died after a short illness on December 30th 1914. He was the third son of John Roby and was apprenticed to the family business of John Roby Ltd in Rainhill in 1882, later becoming a Director. His last home in Rainhill was Cedric House where he lived with his family from 1912.
